The object of a gray tone value underpainting is to provide a perfect foundation that will channel natural sunlight from the canvas all the way up through the finished colors! The Old Masters called this "inner light". Linda Coulter has developed a grisaille (gray tone) palette that ranges from light to dark, transparent to opaque, flat to reflective, and a grisaille palette that can be made in just one minute!
